The Federal Government of Nigeria has stated it’s desire to increase the country’s dependence on Gas, describing the natural resource as the nation’s new source of development for the next decade.
The Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Chief Timipre Sylva noted that there was a need to focus on gas as a bridge to renewable fuels.
“Last year we declared 2020 the year of gas because we realised that we need to focus on gas as a bridge to renewable fuels and we have abundant gas resources, so we need to take advantage of it,” he said in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).
Sylva said the Federal Government is now paying greater attention to gas development because it provides a bigger linkage to the economy than crude oil.
“Gas is produced and it can be transformed to fertiliser and fertiliser can fertilise our agricultural sector.
“Also, the gas that is produced can be transformed into petrochemicals, and petrochemicals can be transformed into everything that we need in life including the plastic on the camera, phones, even the clothes we wear.
“Petrochemicals come from gas, and gas can be transformed to methanol, and this is the basis of chemical and pharmaceutical industries.
“So you can imagine if we harness our gas resources and do a fertiliser blending plant based on gas, then produce the fertilisers and send them to the farmers.
“And you can imagine if all the farmers in Nigeria have access to cheap fertiliser what it would do for our agriculture without anybody doing anything else,” Sylva said.
The minister noted that employment generation from gas alone is immeasurable .
“If you have gas and produce petrochemicals with it, from petrochemicals you produce raisins, power the textile and electricity industry or all kinds of industries, you can imagine the number of job opportunities we can create.
“Thereafter, we can use the gas to power the country.
“We have this kind of resource and we have not even scratched it and then how can we move away from it? Let us face the benefit that is in gas to develop as a country.
“I believe that if we are talking about diversifying Nigeria’s economy, gas is the option, if we go gas, we can use it to diversify the economy faster than any other commodity and fortunately we have it in abundance than any other commodity.
“That is why we are saying, dedicate the next decade to this commodity we have in abundance so that we can use it to catalyse the industrial development of Nigeria.
“That is the whole idea of the decade of gas which the president is championing.”

Sir, the next decade will see the prevalence of biofuel as energy. You guys should think deeper. Think green. Think sustainability. By 2030, there’ll be less vehicles (and possibly homes) running on fossil fuel around the world. Anyway, you people hear but never listen. Incompetent bunch!

These men know how to raise our hope before and after the dash it Lol, So everyone should come to the table let us plan how to share gas money hahahaaaa Nigeria, So gas just appear was not there before, did not we hear that Rusia supplies Europe with gas long time ago, so what was Nigeria doing all that while flaring it. now crude is becoming obsolete less remember gas we overlooked, our problem is leadership.

People are moving away from crude oil , you are saying that’s what your coming generation should depend on . Is it that you guys don’t know that after stealing to get your kids rich they might still marry some of the people you oppressed or even they will rob and kill your offsprings .

When Great nations of the world are dropping use of oil and gas driven economy due to climate change,our country is developing more interest in oil and gas. What a myopic projection from our ecenomic planners. Fossil fuel and gas consumption will soon be obsolate due to climate change. What will happen when these great nations that buy our crude oil and gas stop buying? There was a time when coal was the ultimate fuel to drive engines and generate power. The same is about to happen to fossil fuel and gas due to climate change. Why,why why is Nigeria blessed with myopic leaders? Do our leaders have an iota of idea about climate change at all? Greate nations are drifting towards alternative source of energy, while we are planning to remain in oil and gas driven economy? Na wa o. They should wait till when supply becomes more than demand for gas before they think of developing other aspects of our economy. Cars or most engines will become solar, electric or hydro powered and we are planning to expand our gas production. It’s a pity. Giant of Africa. Where are all the proceeds from our oil and gas gone? Our agricultural and solid mineral sectors are still waiting to be tapped to its fullest. It’s not yet UHURU my people.
