Former Lagos State  commissioner for Transportation and University Don, Prof. Bamidele Abiona Badejo has called for collaboration as well as adherence to international and local laws to ensure marine pollution control.  

Prof. Badejo gave this analysis in Lagos on Thursday while delivering a lecture at the conference organised by the chartered institute of Environmental and public   Health management of Nigeria in collaboration with Maritime Reporters Association of Nigeria (MARAN). 

The erudite professor who delivered his lecture on the theme: ” marine pollution control and the challenges of seaport Environmental Health management in the 21st century pointed out that the implications of marine pollution on the overall water transportation are quite enormous. 

According to him the issue of marine pollution has social, economic, political and Environmental  consequences. He however emphasised that the way to sustainable Environment and development is adherence to international best practices, local as well as international laws. 

He identified and listed international and local agencies established to mitigate the process of Environmental degradation.
Some of the key international regulatory agencies include :1. International maritime organization (IMO)2. World Trade organization (WTO)3. United Nations Environment programme (UNEP)Some of the regulatory agencies in Nigeria include: 1. The Nigerian Government2. NIMASA3. NPA4.National oil spill detention and ResponseAgency ( NOSDRA )
“These organizations , through different campaigns and other activities , are involved in protecting the ocean from all such arm and also try to restore vibrant marine life”
The chairman of the occasion Prince olayiwola shittu who was represented by Mr. Pius Ujubonu, Director General chartered institute of Environmental and public Health management of Nigeria, Dr. George Ayoade , President of MARAN, Mr. Joe Njoku and other speakers at the conference also advocate the need for collaboration , coordination, strong data base, research , prevention, awareness creation on  print , Electronics, social media , prevention as well as passion for the environment as key to marine pollution control.

 He commended MAJAN and the institute for the collaboration and organisation of the conference.
The conference also featured presentation of certificates and induction of New members of the chartered institute of Environmental and public Health management of Nigeria.
