Life profile of Brown Ebe

Brown Ebewele is a man of quintessential and significance, a retentive historian, athlete and an apt analyst who dissected issues without prejudice.  He was robust in current affairs and sports to the extent of earning for himself the appelation “walking encyclopedia” because of his wide knowledge of sports.

He got scholarship from the federal government through the Bendel state sports council, and proceeded to America to study.

The former Olympia, led Team Edo to the 20th National sports festival in Benin city. Ebewele as a former national champion introduced decathlon into the nation’s athletics championship in 1978, while competing as an athlete for then Bendel state. Highly reputed athletics coach, sports administrator,he was rated the best national coach and sports administrator of all times in Africa.

Ebewele rose to become a Director and ultimately a Commissioner of sports in Edo State during the administration of former governor, Chief Lucky Igbinedion.
As Director of Sports, Ebewele piloted Team Edo to the top of the medals table when the state hosted the 2002 edition of the best sports festival.

At the beginning of his athletics career, Brown Ebewele competed for Lagos State as a junior athlete in the maiden edition of the National sports festival in 1973. He was a junior hammer thrower then. He also represented Lagos State at the second edition of sports festival held in Lagos.

Ebewele’s first competition for the then Bendel State was at Kaduna edition of the National sports festival. Competing as a mature athlete, Ebewele won a gold medal for Bendel state and also set a national record in the hammer event in Kaduna.

Ebewele went on to represent Nigeria at the 1978 All Africa Games in Algiers and grabbed a silver medal in decathlon. He also represented the country at many international competitions. 

 As a sports administrator and Commissioner of Sports, he did his best to uplift sports in then Bendel State, and Edo State. His times were a memorable period to the achievements of the state in sports.

His remains were committed to mother’s earth on 28th January 2022. Adieu, a great son of Esan land. We all miss you.
