International Workers Day: Labour Leaders salute workers resilience, pledge improvement of their welfare.

International Workers day, also known as Labour day in most countries was chosen by the Federation of Labour in America to continue an earlier campaign for eight hours working time which had been the cause of a general strike on 1st May 1886.

Since 1886 workers in most countries had adopted the day to show solidarity amongst themselves throughout the world and campaign for better working conditions.

 It is a day to reflect and ponder on issues affecting workers, their welfare and employment.

In Nigeria, the day popular known as May Day has been upgraded to a special day in which labour leaders show solidarity with their members, while government leaders try to show their affection.

To celebrate this year’s 2022 May Day , there would be gathering of workers in the states and in Abuja, to be attended by workers of various unions, their leaders and government officials.

In a statement felicitating with her workers, the Association of Senior Civil Servants of Nigeria assured members that the current national leadership is committed to the pursuit of welfare issues  including the restoration of payment of gratuity to public service employees.

Felicitating with workers, the President of the Petroleum Natural Gas Senior Staff Association, PENGASSAN,  Comrade Festus Osibo saluted their steadfastness, dedication and commitment towards the growth and development of the oil and gas industry despite numerous challenges including inadequate security.

He pledged that the  Association will not relent to see to improvement in their wages, allowances and better conditions of service. Osifo said the Association is concerned with the issue of outsourcing and casualisation in the industry, pledging to see to the unionisation of at least 90percent of them.

In his own message, President General Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria, Prince  Abdulwaheed Adeyanju said Maritime workers have cause to celebrate despite challenges, as the union in the last few years had worked towards better packages for them.

Prince Adeyanju pledged that the union will continue to work with all stakeholders towards  further improvement of the lots of the workers.
