A breaking news heritage! a cast of heroes

Labour Writers elect new members of executive.

On Thursday 12th January 2023, inside the Conference room of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Yaba-Lagos the atmosphere was a bit charged as members of the formidable Labour Writers Association of Nigeria (LAWAN)

went to the polls to elect new executive members to run the Association.

The members went to the polls to decide who emerges for the critical position of Chairman as the other positions were unopposed. After a keenly contested election under the watch of the Chairman Lagos Council of Nigeria Union of Journalists, Comrade Adeleye Ajayi, Mr. Toba Agboola of the Nation Newspapers emerged victorious defeating Sharon Ijasan of TVC by 14 votes to 10.

Other members of the new executive elected unopposed are Vice Chairman, Mr. Sunday Ojeme from Telegraph Newspaper, Secretary Adenike Ajiboye from Superscreen Television, Assistant Secretary, Mrs Gloria Nwafor from Guardian Newspaper, Joy Ekeke-Obakeye as Treasurer from Daily Times.

The position of Auditor is to be administer by Elder Ufomba Uzuegbu from Champion Newspapers while Mr Andrew Ojiezel from Daily Independent is Financial Secretary.

In his acceptance speech, the new Chairman Mr Toba Agboola who hitherto had been Acting Chairman promised to run an open government devoid of sentiments, describing the outcome of the election, a new dawn in the affairs of the Association.

Mr. Agboola recognised that there were divisive opinions on who should become Chairman, but pledged to work with all members towards a formidable and progressive LAWAN.

Prior to the election, the Chairman of the Lagos Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Comrade Adeleye Ajayi described the Labour Writers Association(LAWAN) as one of the formidable associations within NUJ.

Mr. Adeleye Ajayi said LAWAN members should not see the election as a do or die affair. Mr. Ajayi was accompanied to the event by the Secretary of the Council, Mr. Tunde Olalere and the Financial Secretary of the Council, Comrade Innocent Ababa.
